Our Story

In early 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had everyone scrambling for normalcy, Dr. Laura Nielsen’s full-time work fell to part-time. This allowed her the unique opportunity to participate in the creation of three new entities. She was a founding partner of both a group psychological practice, a non-profit organization (Desert Sage Resource Center), as well as the owner and founder of Petrichor Psychological Consultants, PLLC.

As she transitioned back into full-time work in a community health clinic, the other entities continued to thrive and grow. It was exciting, stressful, and an overall rich experience as she witnessed the ins, outs, ups, downs, and sideways of business ownership. As 2021 wound down, Dr. Laura concluded that it was best to leave the two entities in which she was partner in hands of those who could fully invest their time and energies into them. In Summer 2022 she finally decided to take the biggest leap of all, full time private practice. She secured contracts with her greatest mentor, her father Dr. Earl Nielsen, as well as other trusted colleagues to ensure Petrichor would provide the best services available in Northern Nevada and into California.

A note from Dr. Laura Nielsen:

“Petrichor” is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on warm dry soil. The word is constructed from the Greek “Petra” meaning rock and “ichor” referencing the fluid that flowed through the veins of Olympian deities in ancient mythology. Personally, I have always been drawn to the pleasant aroma that accompanies the infrequent occurrence of precipitation in Northern Nevada;

However, beyond my preference I have found special symbolism in the word as well. To me, quality psychological interventions are based on solid (rock-like), empirically supported research and data. Further, when applied successfully those same interventions may empower a person to feel some semblance of control and/or relief (like I imagine an Olympian Deity might feel). Overall, I hope to bring something resembling refreshment to those who struggle with their mental health.

Finally, “Psychological Consultants” is an homage to my father’s private practice (Dr. Earl Nielsen) of the same name
